Ready to take your dressmaking skills to the next level? This 10-week course is designed for confident and experienced dressmakers who want to tackle more challenging garments with expert support along the way.
You’ll have 10 weeks of dedicated sewing time to work independently, at your own pace, with guidance from our tutor whenever you need it. Along the way, you’ll develop your fitting, pattern-reading, construction and finishing skills, while picking up professional tips and techniques from the tutor and other makers in the studio.
We suggest three patterns that are ideal:
- Frida Shirt – develop your skills with collars, cuffs, yokes, button stands and sleeves.
- Thea trousers – focus on fit, pockets, fly zips, waistbands and professional finishing.
- Mystery Pattern – a surprise advanced project designed to challenge and develop your skills.
You’re also welcome to bring an alternative pattern of your choice, provided it is suitable for an advanced dressmaker.
What you’ll learn
Depending on your chosen project, support may include:
- Understanding pattern instructions and selecting the correct size
- Pattern adjustments, grading between sizes and fitting
- Pattern layout, grainline and fabric considerations
- Transferring markings and working accurately
- Darts, seams and professional seam finishes
- Pockets, zips, buttonholes and fastenings
- Collars, cuffs, waistbands and sleeves
- Construction techniques and professional finishing
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving throughout your project
This is a supported sewing course rather with some step-by-step elements, it will be a mixture of working independently whist having expert help available whenever you need it. It’s also a great opportunity to learn from the questions, techniques and problem-solving of other experienced dressmakers in the room.
Who is this suitable for?
Over 16s and confident dressmakers with existing dressmaking experience. You should be comfortable using a sewing machine and have a good understanding of basic dressmaking techniques.
What’s included:
10 weeks of supported studio sewing and expert tuition. Your chosen pattern, fabric and any additional materials are not included, but these can be discussed and purchased through us where available.
Please note: 10 weeks gives you plenty of time to develop your garment, but everyone works at a different pace and you may need to complete some work at home between sessions.
